Wuhai city is located in the western part of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, lying in the combination area of Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Gansu. The city has an area of 1,754 square kilometers, and the permanent population is 0.56 million, with three districts under its administration.

Wuhai is a new industrial city. Since the late 1950s, with the opening for service of the Baotou-Lanzhou railway, Wuhai has begun to develop rapidly as an area that is rich in resources.

Wuhai is surrounded by three mountains, with a river running through it, and is known as the "Pearl of the Yellow River". The key Yellow River Haibowan Water Control Project succeeded in reserving water, and the "Wuhai Lake" of 118 square kilometers is taking shape. The effect of ecological civilization construction is remarkable. The green coverage rate reached 43 percent, the forest coverage rate reached 17.5 percent, and park green area reached 19.5 square meters per capita, all contributing to the city's honorable title of "national green model city".

The city has rich resources of water, soil, light and heat. It is a grape production base that is comparable to the Xinjiang Turpan region, and a number of grape varieties in the city have won national awards.
