The Inner Mongolia autonomous region has one of China's largest forested areas and is an important site for ecological protection in northern China, with 23.66 million hectares of forest, or one-eighth of the nation's total, totaling 21.03 percent of forest coverage.

According to the integrated results of the 2021 regional survey and monitoring of forestry, grassland, and wetlands aligned with the third national land survey, Inner Mongolia has 385 million mu of forest land. Its total standing timber stock volume reaches 1.46 billion cubic meters, including 1.45 billion cubic meters of forest stock volume. The region's forest coverage rate stands at 20.79 percent.

Forests in the region are mainly distributed in the primary forest area of the Greater Hinggan Mountains, the secondary forest area of the southern Greater Hinggan Mountains, as well as secondary forest areas in Hexigten Banner, Daqing Mountain, Manhan Mountain, Helan Mountain, and Ejine Banner.
