Baotou has launched a pilot student pick-up and drop-off lane (SDPL) at a primary school in Hondlon district to ease congestion and safeguard students' travel safety.

This time‑shared dedicated lane is reserved for temporary stops of vehicles transporting students to and from school. By clarifying road-use rights and restricting operating hours, it enables vehicles to pull in and depart quickly, improving traffic efficiency and safety.

The outermost vehicle lane is designated as the SDPL, with defined start and end points and dedicated operating hours (7:20 am-8:10 am; 11:30 am-12:00 pm; 2:00 pm-2:30 pm; 5:10-6:00 pm). After vehicles pull over alongside the 1-meter-wide platform marked along the outermost edge, students may alight and walk safely into the school.

Multiple traffic signs are installed along the SDPL, clearly indicating lane attributes, eligible vehicle types, and operating hours. The signs guide vehicles to plan routes and enter the lane, improving visibility and traffic order. Outside dedicated hours, the SPDL functions as a regular traffic lane, balancing road capacity and resource utilization.

The Hondlon district traffic and transportation department has set up fixed‑duty posts to guide vehicles in compliance with rules, ensuring students cross the road safely and minimizing the impact on main‑road traffic flows.
