The revival of Erdaosha River

Updated: 2025-06-23

Erdaosha River, a primary tributary of the Yellow River, glistens in the sun with clear waters that reflect the mid-June sky. Once a notorious "sewage ditch", it has transformed into an ecological gem, attracting anglers and tourists to its wetlands and scenic trails.

Baotou has launched a comprehensive campaign to address pollution, implementing measures such as industrial wastewater recycling and advanced treatment projects. Daily sewage discharge has decreased by over 60,000 metric tons since 2020, while key pollutants, such as ammonia nitrogen, have decreased by 87.1 percent. An artificial wetland of about 48.5 hectares, featuring recreational and educational zones, has enhanced biodiversity and now serves as a cultural landmark.

Locals like 74-year-old angler Li Chunsheng celebrate the river's revival, calling it an "undeniable achievement". The rejuvenated Erdaosha River now symbolizes the city's commitment to ecological and cultural prosperity.
