Grass-light complementary pilot project launches in Damao

Updated: 2025-06-20

Damao Banner in Inner Mongolia has pioneered China's first grass-light complementary project in desert grasslands, combining solar power generation with ecological restoration. The 50-megawatt photovoltaic array, now 55 percent complete, is set to begin grid-connected power generation by September.

This innovative project features elevated solar panels (1.5 meters high) to allow for grassland restoration and livestock grazing underneath. It is expected to generate 85 million kilowatt-hours annually, saving 30,000 metric tons of standard coal and reducing CO2 emissions by 90,000 tons.

Supported by national and regional policies, the initiative also includes scientific monitoring of vegetation recovery and partnerships with local herders for shared economic benefits, setting a new standard for sustainable energy development in ecologically fragile areas.
