Baotou pioneers carbon market innovation

Updated: 2025-03-20

Baotou has made a major contribution to China's regional carbon markets by completing its first cross-regional transaction of digital carbon credits. A Wuhai-based enterprise purchased 1,279.66 metric tons of Baotou digital carbon credits at 94.4 yuan ($13) per ton through the city's public resource trading platform, with the 120,800 yuan transaction designated for ecological damage compensation.

This breakthrough expands the market reach of Baotou's innovative carbon accounting system beyond municipal boundaries. Since launching Inner Mongolia autonomous region's first local carbon exchange center in 2024, the city has facilitated five transactions totaling 2,050 tons this year.

"These digital credits serve as both ecological compensation tools and verifiable carbon assets," said an official of the Baotou forestry and grassland bureau. The city plans to broaden implementation through corporate carbon offset initiatives and a novel program of eco-justice and carbon, creating new demand channels while promoting sustainable development across the region.
