Baotou turns industrial waste into resources

Updated: 2024-11-14

Baotou is accelerating its path toward a zero-waste city by transforming industrial solid waste into valuable resources through innovative green projects. In May, Donghe district signed an agreement with Zhejiang Bopu Environment Service Co, followed by the launch of the "Bopu Hefeng Geopolymer" brand and trial operations of China's first full-process geopolymer production line.

Geopolymer is a new type of inorganic cementitious material formed through the alkali activation of minerals rich in silica and alumina. With strong environmental benefits, it provides a sustainable solution for solid waste utilization, reducing pollution while producing valuable building materials.

At Inner Mongolia Bopu Hefeng Environmental Protection Co in Baotou's Donghe Aluminum Industrial Park, the pilot line is already producing non-fired bricks, roadbed materials, fireproof coatings, and insulation products, all of which are made from Baotou's industrial waste, including desulfurization gypsum, steel slag, fly ash, tailings, and other by-products. These materials are now being applied in construction, civil engineering, and prefabricated buildings.

According to the company, future applications in Baotou will expand into mine backfill, soil stabilization, and anti-corrosion coatings for acidic environments. Through the pilot base, the project is expected to play a key role in advancing circular economy practices and sustainable urban development.
