Deer City Laboratory for rare earth settles in Baotou

Updated: 2024-04-30

Deer City Laboratory officially commenced operations in Baotou, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on April 29.

Built by Baotou and the Inner Mongolia Science and Technology Department, the laboratory comprises the Baotou Rare Earth New Materials Technology Research and Development Center and the Baotou Rare Earth Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The laboratory encompasses six major functional areas, covering tracking enterprise innovation needs, conducting experiments and research, bridging production and research, promoting the practical application of scientific research achievements, providing public services for industries, and training innovative scientific research talent.

The laboratory is currently focusing on some key projects, including the establishment of a rare earth permanent magnet motor research center in collaboration with the team led by Researcher Chen Biao from the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The two parties aim to promote the conversion of the high-speed and high-power rare earth permanent magnet motor project for new energy vehicles in Baotou.

Deer City Laboratory plans to develop itself into an autonomous region-level laboratory with industry influence by 2026 and a rare earth innovation platform with national influence by 2030.

Furthermore, the laboratory aims to incubate more than 20 technology-based enterprises and establish over 10 industry-academic-research cooperation centers.
